Alan Heuston is the head of the McCann FitzGerald LLP betting and gaming group and was previously director of tax in Flutter Entainment Plc (previously called Paddy Power Betfair plc) which is the largest online betting and gaming company globally. Alan is recognised as one of Ireland’s leading advisors in the gambling space. He provides legal and tax advice to domestic and international operators who are carrying on betting (online and retail), gaming (including “bricks and mortar” casinos), exchange, lottery and fantasy activities in Ireland. Alan also advises on the commercial arrangements that affect betting and gaming companies, and assists operators and suppliers who want to use Ireland as a base for hosting betting and gaming platforms. Alan has played an active role in the reform of gambling regulation in Ireland. Alan led the McCann FitzGerald LLP team which was engaged by the Irish Department of Justice to produce a detailed set of proposals, which would help to inform and shape the preparation of the new framework for the licensing and regulation of gambling activities in Ireland . Many of these regulations have been adopted in the Gambling Regulation Act 2024. Alan is a member of the International Masters of Gaming Law (IMGL) and is a regular writer on issues of relevance to the gambling industry.
