Description

There are many kinds of legal writing. They include emails, memos, advices (formal and informal), wills, family arrangements, divorce settlements, commercial transactions (small, large, multi-national), consumer contracts, statutes and regulations, treaties, etc, but what makes effective legal writing?

Effective legal writing must be legally accurate and communicate clearly to its intended audience. This book concentrates on the latter element explaining the main principles of effective legal writing, in particular, legal writing in plain English - 'plain legal language'.

Split into six parts the book:
- Explains the benefits of using plain language in law
- Examines the basic techniques for ensuring that legal writing is in plain language
- Addresses the unique challenges for those writing in plain language and suggests ways to deal with them
- Discusses various techniques which modern legal writers have adopted (and adapted) to help readers navigate complex legal texts
- Considers the importance of structure in two standard areas of legal writing: advices and documents
- Uses practical examples to show the improvements that a careful, measured plain-language approach can bring when revising legal writing and redrafting legal documents

With the influence of legalese waning the use of plain legal language needs to be embraced. This book shows how.
