'The family justice system can seem like a frightening and mysterious world to those of us who only intermittently come into contact with the legal profession. This book does an excellent job of de-mystifying the family court processes; I wish it had been available when I was a junior doctor. I may have avoided a number of sleepless nights.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone working with children and young people and urge you to invest in a copy - you won't regret it.'
Dr Fiona Straw, Consultant Paediatrician and Joint Head of Service for Community Paediatrics, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust
Child protection made simple: the plain-speaking guide for all those concerned with the protection of children.
Providing up-to-date coverage of the key issues in this challenging and sensitive area of law, Child Protection and the Family Court: What You Need to Know offers a valuable point of reference for all involved in the child protection process, from teaching, medical or other professionals to parents and carers.
In addition to updated coverage of local authority safeguarding duties and investigations, parental responsibility, special guardianship, wardship and the inherent jurisdiction and secure accommodation, the Fourth Edition includes coverage of:
- The changes to the approach to child protection both in and out of the Family Court, particularly pre-proceedings work
- Detailed discussion of openness in the Family Court, following the President's Transparency Review of 2021
Written by an esteemed author team, including the President of the Family Division, a Family Court judge and a practising barrister, it offers non-specialist family lawyers, teachers, medical professionals and the police a clear and uncomplicated route through the process, with explanation supported by diagrams and charts to aid understanding.

The book is clear, sensibly laid out and effort is made to avoid overly complex or 'lawyerly' language...I applaud the aim of offering this text to the widest possible audience. I think it would be difficult to improve upon the structure and the topics of this text.
Sarah Phillimore, barrister at St John's Chambers, Bristol and site administrator of Child Protection Resource, Review of the Third Edition, ICLR
This book is going to go a long way to helping DSLs and headteachers…If you work with vulnerable children a lot of the time, if you're very involved in child protection as opposed to safeguarding, then I think this is a really good reference shelf book that you can dip into when necessary…
Review of the Third Edition, Safeguarding in Schools
…a jargon-free, well-structured book that appears to have the right amount of information for GPs, with or without a specific child safeguarding role, for reference in their day-to-day role…The authors avoid legalese, choosing rather to employ simple English, with clear explanations of key legislation and procedure. The text is friendly to the eye; paragraphs are sequentially-enumerated, ensuring that any cross referencing isn't tedious; and salient information is highlighted. There are also several informative case studies to focus attention on important topics or dilemmas.
