"A valuable source of help and guidance to all of those involved in issues of child protection" Sarah Phillimore, barrister from a previous edition review in ICLR
Providing up-to-date coverage of the key issues in this challenging and sensitive area of law, this book offers a valuable point of reference for all involved in the child protection process, from professionals to parents and carers. Written by an esteemed author team with extensive experience of family courts, it offers a clear and uncomplicated route through the process, with explanation supported by diagrams and charts to aid understanding.
In addition to updated coverage of local authority safeguarding duties and investigations, parental responsibility, special guardianship, wardship and the inherent jurisdiction and secure accommodation, new content in this edition includes the changes to the approach to child protection both in and out of the family court, with greater pre-proceedings work which is of interest to child protection professionals. Transparency is also a major new theme covered in detail, following the President's Transparency Review of 2021.

The book is clear, sensibly laid out and effort is made to avoid overly complex or 'lawyerly' language...I applaud the aim of offering this text to the widest possible audience. I think it would be difficult to improve upon the structure and the topics of this text.
Sarah Phillimore, barrister at St John's Chambers, Bristol and site administrator of Child Protection Resource, Review of the Third Edition, ICLR
This book is going to go a long way to helping DSLs and headteachers…If you work with vulnerable children a lot of the time, if you're very involved in child protection as opposed to safeguarding, then I think this is a really good reference shelf book that you can dip into when necessary…
Review of the Third Edition, Safeguarding in Schools
…a jargon-free, well-structured book that appears to have the right amount of information for GPs, with or without a specific child safeguarding role, for reference in their day-to-day role…The authors avoid legalese, choosing rather to employ simple English, with clear explanations of key legislation and procedure. The text is friendly to the eye; paragraphs are sequentially-enumerated, ensuring that any cross referencing isn't tedious; and salient information is highlighted. There are also several informative case studies to focus attention on important topics or dilemmas.
